Level:  Introductory

A successful master data management (MDM) program begins with an understanding of the inherent challenges of sharing a unified view of critical data concepts domains. Assessing business information needs, specifying enterprise-wide data policies, and engaging the master data user community are prerequisites to success, and while unbridled enthusiasm on behalf of technologists initiates the drive towards MDM, it is critical to evaluate the myths and realities of MDM and define critical success factors within the context of business expectations and feasibility of execution.

This tutorial provides an overview of MDM techniques and technologies, and then focuses on data management, data governance, and enterprise coordination issues that can impede progress. In turn, we explore approaches to preparing the organization to establish data management best practices that reduce risks of MDM failure.

Attendees will be provided an introduction to:

  • The MDM component model and prototypical architectures
  • MDM myths and realities
  • MDM operational, organizational, and technical challenges
  • Master data models, semantics, metadata, data quality, and data governance
  • Master data services for data repurposing, sharing, synchronization, and publication
